What Is Bitrate?

Bitrate is a data rate, not a complete measure of image quality. The source, codec, encoder settings, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect how much data is needed for an acceptable result. Increasing bitrate can reduce compression artifacts up to diminishing returns; it cannot restore detail absent from the source or guarantee better quality than a more efficient encode. CBR (constant bitrate) aims for a constrained rate over the encoder's buffering interval, not identical-sized frames, and is often useful when live delivery needs predictable bandwidth. VBR (variable bitrate) varies the rate with complexity and may use average-rate targets or quality-based control. It can allocate bits more efficiently, but does not by itself guarantee a particular file size. File-size estimates use the combined average video and audio bitrates, duration, and container overhead. Follow the destination's current guidance and inspect the encoded result.
