Chroma key (chroma = color) is a compositing method that keys out a chosen backdrop color and replaces it with another image or video. It requires a physical green or blue screen lit evenly, and the subject must not wear the key color or they become transparent too. Green is the modern default because digital sensors capture the most green detail, it lights evenly with less power, and it is far from skin tones; blue is used when the subject wears green or for night scenes. Chroma key produces excellent, precise edges — including fine hair — when the screen is lit correctly, but it suffers from green spill, uneven-lighting artifacts, and wrinkles.
