Final Cut Pro vs DaVinci Resolve (2026): Which Should Mac Editors Pick?

Pick Final Cut Pro if you edit only on a Mac and want an approachable professional editor with a magnetic timeline: $299.99 once, or included in Apple Creator Studio at $12.99 a month. Pick DaVinci Resolve if you want deeper color, audio and effects tools, need Windows or Linux too, or want to pay nothing; Studio is $295 once. Prices as of October 2026.
Both run on current Macs, and both are serious enough for client work. The difference is philosophy. Final Cut Pro is Apple's Mac and iPad editor, built around a timeline that keeps clips in sync as you move them. Resolve is Blackmagic Design's cross-platform suite, with separate pages for editing, color, Fairlight audio and Fusion effects. For the wider field, see CapCut vs DaVinci Resolve vs Premiere Pro or our five-way comparison.

How Much Do Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve Cost?
Both can cost you about $300 once. Resolve can also cost nothing, and Final Cut Pro now has a subscription option.
Apple sells Final Cut Pro for Mac as a one-time purchase for $299.99, and says, "If you already own Final Cut Pro, it will continue to be updated." Final Cut Pro is also part of Apple Creator Studio, a subscription that includes Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Motion, Compressor and MainStage. After a 30-day free trial, it's $12.99 a month or $129 a year, or $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year for students and educators. Apple adds three months free with a new Mac or iPad. Final Cut Pro for iPad is only available through Creator Studio, and Apple says some premium content is subscriber-only.
DaVinci Resolve is free and exports up to Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 at 60fps. DaVinci Resolve Studio is $295 once and adds up to 32K at 120fps, 10-bit encoding, most professional formats, and the Studio-only Neural Engine tools.
| Option (October 2026) | Upfront | Three-year total |
|---|---|---|
| DaVinci Resolve (free) | $0 | $0 |
| DaVinci Resolve Studio | $295 | $295 |
| Final Cut Pro, one-time purchase | $299.99 | $299.99 |
| Apple Creator Studio, annual | $0 for 30 days, then $129/yr | about $387 |
| Apple Creator Studio, monthly | $0 for 30 days, then $12.99/mo | about $455 |
Don't forget the Mac. Final Cut Pro needs macOS 15.6 or later and 8GB of memory (16GB recommended), and Apple says some features require Apple silicon.
Magnetic Timeline vs Track-Based Editing
This is the biggest day-to-day difference, and it's mostly a matter of taste.
Final Cut Pro's Magnetic Timeline doesn't use fixed tracks. Your main story sits in a primary storyline, and B-roll, titles and music connect to clips in it. When you move or trim a clip, everything attached to it moves along, and gaps close automatically. Apple describes it as a way to "experiment with different edits and story ideas by moving and trimming clips, all while keeping everything in sync." Editors who like it find it fast; editors coming from Premiere or Avid often find it disorienting at first.
Resolve's Edit page uses the conventional numbered video and audio tracks most editors learn first. Its Cut page offers a quicker alternative for fast turnarounds, with a dual timeline and a "source tape" view that plays every clip in a bin as one strip. If you're new to the concepts, our guide to the video editing timeline explains both models.
Which Runs Better on a Mac?
Final Cut Pro is built specifically for Apple hardware; Resolve's Mac performance depends more on which version you own. We haven't benchmarked either, so here is only what the vendors state.
Apple says Visual Search, Transcript Search and Generate Captions require Apple silicon, and that Compressor uses the Apple Media Engine for "significantly faster ProRes, HEVC, and H.264 processing." Final Cut Pro 12.3 switched proxy media from H.264 to HEVC for better compression.
Blackmagic lists 10-bit encoding and accelerated H.264 and H.265 hardware decoding and encoding as Studio features, and says the free version supports 8-bit formats. If your iPhone or mirrorless camera records 10-bit HEVC, check how the free version handles your files before you rely on it. The practical test is free on both sides: use Apple's 30-day Creator Studio trial and the free Resolve download on your own footage.
How Do Color and Audio Compare?
Resolve leads on both, but Final Cut Pro covers what most YouTube, wedding and corporate editors need.
Final Cut Pro's color inspector has color wheels, curves, hue and saturation curves and LUT support, plus an Enhance Light and Color effect "powered by machine learning." Version 12.3 added matching color across cameras and lighting conditions, and Auto Mask for isolating recognized objects to correct them. For audio, Voice Isolation reduces background noise in speech, and third-party audio plug-ins are supported.
Resolve's node-based Color page is where Blackmagic built its reputation for color grading; its product page calls it "Hollywood's Most Advanced Color Corrector." Fairlight is a complete audio post-production page with ADR tools, and Studio adds immersive 3D mixing, including Dolby Atmos, plus AI voice isolation and dialogue separation. If you grade for clients or deliver to a mix spec, Resolve is the stronger choice.
How Does Multicam Editing Compare?
Both do professional multicam editing; only Resolve Studio switches angles for you.
In Final Cut Pro, you build multicam clips that sync by timecode, camera date and time, or audio waveforms. You then watch all angles in the angle viewer and cut between them in real time, switching video and audio together or separately. On iPad, Apple says you can connect up to four iPhone or iPad cameras, control them remotely and sync the footage automatically.
Resolve's free version has manual multicam. Studio 20 and later add AI Multicam SmartSwitch, which picks angles using active-speaker audio and lip movement for a first pass you refine. Our roundup of automatic multicam editing tools compares both with other options.
Which Has Better AI Features?
Final Cut Pro includes all its AI tools in the price; Resolve's strongest ones mostly need Studio.
According to Apple's release notes, Final Cut Pro has added AI and machine-learning tools steadily: Smooth Slo-Mo and Enhance Light and Color (10.8), Magnetic Mask for isolating people and objects without a green screen, and Transcribe to Captions (11.0), Transcript Search, Visual Search and Beat Detection (12.0, January 2026), and Generate Captions and Auto Mask (12.3, June 2026). Apple notes that Visual Search and Generate Captions are US English only.
Blackmagic lists these Neural Engine features as Studio-only: facial recognition, Super Scale, speed warp, magic mask, voice isolation, music remixer, dialogue separator, smart reframe, object removal and scene cut detection. Resolve 21 adds AI IntelliSearch, AI CineFocus, AI UltraSharpen and AI Slate ID, among others; Blackmagic's pages don't mark which new tools need Studio.
Plugins, Effects and Collaboration
Resolve has more built in; Final Cut Pro leans on companion apps and third-party plug-ins.
Final Cut Pro supports third-party FxPlug effects and audio plug-ins. For custom titles and effects you use Motion, which comes with Creator Studio or as a separate one-time purchase, and 12.3 lets you send a frame to Pixelmator Pro with one click. Resolve includes Fusion for compositing, a library of over 90 Resolve FX, and support for third-party OpenFX plug-ins.
For teams, Apple's documentation describes keeping media on shared storage, such as Xsan, SMB or NFS volumes, and copying events and projects between libraries. It doesn't document several editors working in one library at once. Resolve's free version supports multiple people working on the same project simultaneously, and Blackmagic Cloud can host projects and media for remote teams.
Where Does CapCut Fit?
CapCut is the quick option for social clips, not a replacement for either. It runs on phones, desktops and the web, and it's built around templates, trending effects and auto captions for vertical video. As of October 2026, CapCut's help center says 4K, 60fps and watermark-free export of projects with Pro assets require Pro, which the US App Store lists at $19.99 a month. Many Mac editors cut the main video in Final Cut Pro or Resolve and use CapCut for fast vertical versions. See CapCut vs Premiere Pro for how it compares with a desktop editor.
Which Should You Pick?
- Choose Final Cut Pro if you edit only on a Mac or iPad, want a fast, approachable timeline, prefer a one-time purchase, or already use Logic Pro and Motion.
- Choose DaVinci Resolve if you want professional color and audio post, need to work on Windows or Linux as well, collaborate with other editors, or want a free editor with no time limit.
- Choose Resolve Studio if you need 10-bit formats, HDR deliverables, AI SmartSwitch multicam or the Studio-only Neural Engine tools.

Full disclosure: we make Loopdesk, an agentic AI video editor that runs in the browser, including Safari. If your bottleneck is repetitive work (silence removal, captions in 108 languages, reframing and batches of 50+ videos), Aura can handle it from a plain-English prompt. It has no free plan or offline mode, and it doesn't replace Final Cut Pro's timeline or Resolve's color page.
