Social Media Publishing: How to Publish Video to Every Platform (2026)

Social media publishing is the step that gets a finished video live on each platform, with its title, caption, thumbnail and settings. You can publish natively in each app, through a scheduling tool, or through official APIs such as the YouTube Data API, TikTok's Content Posting API and Meta's Instagram and Facebook APIs. Each route has its own limits.
The short definition is in our social media publishing glossary entry. This guide covers what happens behind the publish button, what each platform's API allows as of October 2026, which tools post where, and a checklist to run before anything goes live.
Facts checked October 20, 2026 against developer documentation from YouTube, TikTok, Meta, LinkedIn and X, and help pages from Buffer, Hootsuite, Later and Metricool (links under Sources). APIs and supported networks change often. Full disclosure: Loopdesk is our product, and today it publishes to YouTube only.
What is social media publishing?
Social media publishing means putting a finished post live on a platform: the video file plus its title or caption, cover, audience and privacy settings. A "social media publisher" can mean the person who does that for a brand or the software that does it. This guide covers the software side.
There are three ways to publish:
- Native publishing: You upload in the platform's own app or website. You get every in-app feature, such as trending sounds, effects and product tags, but you work one platform at a time.
- Scheduling tools: Buffer, Hootsuite, Later, Metricool and similar tools connect to your accounts and post from a shared calendar at set times. They mostly publish through the platforms' official APIs, so they inherit the API's limits; some also send a reminder you finish in the app.
- API publishing: Your own app, editor or content system calls the platform's API directly. It gives you the most automation and requires developer access, app review and upkeep.
How does publishing through an official API work?
Every major platform follows roughly the same flow:
- Authorize. You sign in through the platform (OAuth) and grant the app permission to post for you.
- Upload. The app sends the file in chunks, or gives the platform a public URL to fetch it from.
- Describe. It attaches the title or caption, privacy level, cover and any disclosures.
- Process. The platform transcodes the video while the app checks its status.
- Publish or fail. The post goes live at once or at a scheduled time, or returns an error you need to fix.
YouTube Data API
The videos.insert method uploads a video and sets its metadata, with a maximum file size of 256 GB. Titles can be up to 100 characters and descriptions up to 5,000 bytes. To schedule, an app sets status.publishAt, which only works while the video is private and has never been published.
As of October 2026, uploads are charged to their own Video Uploads quota bucket, and the reference lists 100 calls per day for that bucket. YouTube moved uploads to this granular quota system on June 1, 2026; developers can request more quota through Google's extension form.
TikTok Content Posting API
TikTok offers two modes. Direct Post (the video.publish scope) publishes straight to the creator's profile. Upload (the video.upload scope) sends the video to the creator's TikTok inbox, where they finish and post it in the app.
Before a direct post, the app must query the creator's current settings, show only the privacy options TikTok returns, and stop videos longer than that account's maximum. Content posted by unaudited apps is restricted to private viewing until the app passes TikTok's audit.
Accepted video: MP4 (recommended), WebM or MOV, H.264 (recommended), H.265, VP8 or VP9, 23 to 60 fps, 360 to 4,096 pixels per side and up to 4 GB. The longest video an app can send is 10 minutes. Each user token is limited to 6 posting requests per minute, and TikTok enforces a daily post cap per user.
Instagram and Facebook
Meta's Instagram API publishes only to Instagram professional accounts, meaning business or creator accounts. An app creates a media container (for a Reel, media_type=REELS) from a public video URL or a resumable upload, then publishes the container. Accounts are limited to 100 API-published posts in a rolling 24 hours.
API Reels must be MOV or MP4 with H.264 or HEVC video, 23 to 60 fps, 3 seconds to 15 minutes long and up to 300 MB. Shopping tags and filters aren't supported. Captions can run to 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags.
On Facebook, the Reels Publishing API posts to Facebook Pages only, not personal profiles. It allows 30 API-published reels in a rolling 24 hours, and its spec is 9:16 video, 1080x1920 recommended, 3 to 90 seconds long.
LinkedIn and X
LinkedIn's Videos API uploads video, captions and thumbnails that a post then references. Posting as a member needs the w_member_social permission; posting for a company Page needs w_organization_social and an admin or content role on that Page.
X uploads video through its v2 chunked media endpoints (initialize, append, finalize, then check status). Duration and file size limits depend on the account's Premium or verified status, and the X API is sold on pay-per-usage credits.

| Hootsuite | Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, WhatsApp, Pinterest | Its FAQ says scheduling TikToks requires a TikTok Business account |
| Later | Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads, YouTube Shorts, Snapchat | Long-form YouTube isn't supported; no X or Bluesky |
| Metricool | Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads, Bluesky, Pinterest, Google Business Profile | YouTube videos and Shorts up to 500 MB; 10 YouTube posts per 24 hours on Free, 20 on paid plans |

Loopdesk is our product. It's in the table for completeness, and its publishing coverage is the narrowest here today.
Should you publish natively, with a scheduler or through an API?
Use each where it fits:
- Publish natively when the post depends on in-app features: a trending sound, effects, product tagging or collaborators. Scheduled and API posts often can't use them; Instagram's own scheduler, for example, doesn't support product tagging or collaborative posts.
- Use a scheduler when you post on a regular cadence to several networks or need team approvals. Check that it supports the format you need, since several tools handle YouTube Shorts but not long-form YouTube.
- Use the API when publishing is part of your own product or pipeline. Budget time for app review (TikTok's audit, Meta's permissions) and for changes, such as YouTube's 2026 quota update.
You can mix them: route routine posts through a scheduler and post trend-driven ones natively.
What should you check before you publish?
Run this list on every post, scheduled or not:
- The right file for each platform: aspect ratio, resolution and a length that fits what the platform recommends, not just what it accepts.
- The right account type: an Instagram professional account for API and scheduler posting, and a Facebook Page, not a personal profile, for API posting.
- Live connections: reconnect any account whose permission has expired before the scheduled time.
- Text within limits: YouTube titles up to 100 characters; Instagram captions up to 2,200 characters and 30 hashtags.
- Captions and safe zones: burned-in captions for feeds, kept clear of on-screen buttons. Our Reels pre-publish checklist covers placement.
- A deliberate cover or thumbnail, not whichever frame the platform picks.
- Audience and disclosures: made-for-kids status, and YouTube's altered or synthetic content disclosure where it applies.
- The time zone of the scheduled time.
- Rate limits when you batch-post, such as 100 API posts a day on Instagram or 30 API reels a day on Facebook.
- Confirmation: after the scheduled time, open the platform and check that the post is live.
Can you publish from Loopdesk?
Yes, to YouTube. Loopdesk's Calendar schedules a rendered video to your connected YouTube channel: you pick the video, add a title and other details, set the date and time, and select Dispatch Task. Loopdesk advises checking YouTube after the scheduled time to confirm the video published.
YouTube is currently the only platform you can connect. Meta is listed but not currently available, and TikTok and X are coming soon. For other networks, export platform versions from the editor (see one-click distribution) and post them natively or through a scheduler. Step-by-step instructions are in our guide to scheduling videos on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, and the design thinking behind the calendar is in Building Chronos.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is social media publishing?
Social media publishing is getting a finished post live on a platform: the video plus its title or caption, cover and privacy settings. You can publish natively in each app, through a scheduling tool such as Buffer or Later, or through the platform's official API.
What is the difference between publishing and scheduling?
Publishing makes a post live; scheduling sets the time it goes live. Native apps, scheduling tools and APIs can all do both. Scheduling tools and APIs publish through the same official interfaces, so a scheduled post follows the same API limits as an immediate one.
Can third-party apps post directly to TikTok?
Yes, through TikTok's Content Posting API. Direct Post publishes to the profile, and Upload sends the video to the creator's inbox to finish in the app. Content from apps that haven't passed TikTok's audit is restricted to private viewing.
Do you need a business account to publish to Instagram from a scheduler?
You need an Instagram professional account, which can be a business or a creator account. Meta's Instagram API only publishes to professional accounts and limits each account to 100 API-published posts in a rolling 24 hours.
Why did my scheduled post fail to publish?
Common causes are an expired account connection, a file outside the API's limits (length, size, format or aspect ratio), a rate limit, or a feature the API doesn't support. Reconnect the account, check the file against the platform's specs, then retry.
Which platforms can Loopdesk publish to?
As of October 2026, Loopdesk schedules and publishes to YouTube only, from its Calendar. Meta is listed but not currently available, and TikTok and X are coming soon. Loopdesk advises checking YouTube after the scheduled time to confirm the video published.
