How Much Does a Video Editor Cost? Freelance, Agency and AI Editor Costs (2026)

US wage data puts the median film and video editor at $36.26 an hour (BLS, May 2025). Upwork's tier medians run from $10 to $100 an hour, productized services start near $14-$30 per short video, and AI editors from $15-$24 a month. Compare cost per finished video, not hourly rates.
Most pages answer this with a single hourly number. The honest answer is a stack of different prices: wages, freelance rates, per-video subscriptions, per-episode podcast services and AI subscriptions, each pricing something different. This guide lays them side by side with sources, then shows how to compare them as cost per finished video. For AI tool pricing in depth, see our AI video editor pricing comparison.
Facts checked October 9, 2026 against the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Upwork, Fiverr, published agency and podcast-editing price pages, vendor pricing pages and the Loopdesk Creator Study. Prices change, and the productized services below are illustrations, not endorsements or market averages. Full disclosure: Loopdesk is our product; its prices sit alongside the others.
How much does a freelance video editor cost?
Freelance rates span an order of magnitude. Upwork's published tiers, drawn from active contracts, show medians of $10 per hour for entry-level editors (below $30), $40 for mid-level ($31-$60) and $100 for senior editors ($61-$150). Fiverr says an average video editing project costs $65, and social video runs $10-$100 per finished minute.
| Source (as read Oct 9, 2026) | Figure | What it measures, and the caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Upwork, "Video Editor Hourly Rates" | Entry below $30/hr (median $10) · mid-level $31-$60 (median $40) · senior $61-$150 (median $100) | "Sourced from active Upwork contracts." The same page's headline says editors "typically cost $6 - $25 per hour", so treat any single number as indicative |
| Fiverr, "How Much Does a Video Editor Cost?" (published Jan 16, 2025; modified Aug 3, 2026) | $65 for an average project · social video $10-$100 per finished minute | Priced per edited minute, "not minutes of work" |
| ZipRecruiter, freelance video editor | About $31.60/hr (US) | Converted from $65,728 a year; 25th-75th percentile $44,500-$82,500. Aggregator |
| Indeed, video editor salaries (updated Oct 4, 2026) | $33.91/hr | General video editors, not freelance |
| Payscale, freelance video editor (updated Sep 2, 2026) | $20.00/hr | Based on 6 salary profiles |
| Talent.com, freelance video editor | $41.80/hr | "Based on 10,000 salaries"; method unstated |
Location matters. Upwork's India page says editors there "typically charge about $10 to $60 per hour", with many mid-level editors at $20-$35 compared with $50 or more domestically. ReelRate's indicative ranges (July 2026, no stated method) are US $25-$150+, Eastern Europe $15-$55, India $5-$35 and the Philippines $10-$30.
How much do in-house video editors earn?
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $75,420 for film and video editors in May 2025, with the lowest 10% earning under $40,280 and the highest 10% over $148,550. Its occupational survey puts the median hourly wage at $36.26. Those figures cover employees, not freelancers, and exclude benefits and overhead.
| BLS measure (May 2025, film and video editors) | Value |
|---|---|
| Median annual wage | $75,420 |
| Annual wage, lowest 10% / highest 10% | under $40,280 / over $148,550 |
| Hourly wage: 10th percentile / median / 90th percentile | $19.37 / $36.26 / $71.42 (wage-and-salary workers only) |
| Projected employment change, 2025-35 | 4% (39,400 to 40,800 jobs) |
| Share of editors who are self-employed | 35% |
The BLS median is not a freelance rate: BLS pay data excludes the 35% of editors who are self-employed, along with the costs of running a business.
How much do video editing services and agencies charge?
Productized editing services price per video or per month rather than per hour. Published plans we checked work out to about $14-$31 per short video (for example $695 for 50 videos, $99 for 4), about $45-$124 per long-form video on monthly plans, and $25-$249 per podcast episode. These are examples, not market averages, and scope limits matter.
| Service | Plan and volume | Price | Effective cost per video | Turnaround and revisions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 99 Dollar Social (short-form) | 4 / 8 / 12 / 20 / 30 videos a month | $99 / $189 / $269 / $429 / $629 | $24.75 down to $20.97 | First batch 4-7 business days; up to 3 revision rounds in month 1, then 1 |
| Editvideo.io (short-form) | 10 / 25 / 50 videos a month, each up to 90 seconds | $195 / $395 / $695 (promotional; listed as was $295 / $495 / $795) | $19.50 / $15.80 / $13.90 | Unlimited revisions; 2-day turnaround (1 day on the 50-video plan) |
| Feedbird (short-form) | 5 short videos a month | From $149 | $29.80 | 2+ revision rounds |
| Vidchops | Weekly plan: 4 credits = 4 long-form or 16 short-form videos | $495 a month | $123.75 per long-form · $30.94 per short-form | 3 revisions per video; 1-2 days; subtitles add $95 a month |
| Editvideo.io (long-form) | 4 / 10 / 22 videos a month | $295 / $495 / $995 (promotional; was $345 / $595 / $1,195) | $73.75 / $49.50 / $45.23 | 48-hour turnaround; unlimited revisions |
| Audionauts (podcast) | Per episode, up to 60 minutes raw | $25 audio · $45 video · $60 audio + video | n/a | 3-day standard; unlimited revisions unless you ask to redo from scratch |
| Pristine Podcasts | Per episode, up to 60 minutes | $120 editing · $249 full package | n/a | 2-3 days; unlimited revisions |
| Next Day Podcast | Audio edit per episode, up to 30 / 60 / 90 minutes raw | $160 / $200 / $240 (or $480 / $600 / $720 a month for unlimited episodes of one show) | n/a | 24 hours; unlimited free revisions |
Read "unlimited revisions" carefully: it rarely means unlimited scope. 99 Dollar Social, for example, includes up to three revision rounds in the first month and one afterwards.
How much do AI video editors cost?
AI video editors cost about $15-$24 a month for entry plans on monthly billing: Loopdesk Creator Lite is $19 ($15 billed annually), Descript Hobbyist $24 ($16), Opus Clip Starter $15, Kapwing Pro $24 ($16) and Runway Standard $15 ($12). Most have free tiers that watermark exports or cap length, resolution or credits.
| Tool | Entry paid plan (monthly · per month billed annually) | Free plan? | What to check (official pricing pages, Oct 9, 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loopdesk | Creator Lite $19 · $15 · Creator Pro $39 · $31 | No free plan listed | No watermark on any plan; unlimited 4K exports and projects; monthly AI credits worth $5 (Lite) or $25 (Pro) plus pay-as-you-go credits; 25 GB / 100 GB storage |
| Descript | Hobbyist $24 · $16 · Creator $35 · $24 | Yes (1 media hour, 720p, watermarked) | Hobbyist: 10 media hours, 400 AI credits, 1080p; 4K starts at Creator |
| Opus Clip | Starter $15 (monthly only) · Pro $29 · $14.50 | Yes (60 credits, watermarked) | Credit-based: Starter 150 credits, Pro 300 |
| Kapwing | Pro $24 · $16 per member | Yes (watermarked, 4-minute exports) | Pro: 1,000 credits, 200 GB |
| Runway | Standard $15 · $12 | Yes (125 one-time credits) | Standard: 625 credits |
| VEED | Billed per seat in local currency; VEED's own pages quote different USD figures | Yes (watermarked, 720p, 10-minute exports) | See Loopdesk vs VEED |
| CapCut | No fixed published price: it "can vary depending on your region, device, and available promotions" | Yes | Check the price in the app |
| Captions | Max $24.99 a month (iOS plans only) | Yes | Credit-based |
A plan price is not the total cost. Credits, export caps, watermarks, storage and seats all change what you pay, and a human still reviews the output. Our pricing comparison covers the hidden-cost traps in detail.
In Loopdesk: Creator Lite is $19 a month ($15 billed annually) with monthly AI credits worth $5, captions in 108 languages, unlimited 4K exports and projects, 25 GB of storage and no watermark. Creator Pro is $39 ($31 billed annually) with AI credits worth $25, all AI models, premium AI agents and 100 GB. There is no free plan. Enterprise pricing is custom. See pricing.
How long does editing take, and what does AI change?
There is no methodology-backed benchmark for editing hours per finished minute: published rules of thumb range from about 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on source and complexity. The best first-party data we can cite is the Loopdesk Creator Study: a manual batch took 8-12 hours for 3-5 clips; an agentic workflow took 1-2 hours for 10-15 clips.
Vendor claims for "hours per finished minute" conflict: Fiverr says 1-2 hours, Editvideo.io (June 2026) says 45-60 minutes, and Pixel8 says 2-3 hours for talking-head video. None publishes a method.
Read the Creator Study with its limits in mind. It was run by Loopdesk, the timings were self-reported (and checked against channel output), a "batch" meant one long session, and clips from one session are not hours per finished minute. Treat it as directional. Cite it as: Loopdesk Creator Study 2026, an analysis of 250 podcaster and creator channels, published at loopdesk.ai/research; the full write-up is in We Interviewed 250 Podcasters.
What does a video cost per finished video? A cost model you can reuse
Compare options as cost per finished video: for a freelancer, hourly rate × hours per video × a revision allowance; for a subscription service, monthly price ÷ videos delivered; for an AI editor, plan price ÷ videos, plus your review time × what your time is worth, plus credit top-ups.
The example below is illustrative. Assume you publish 4 finished 5-minute videos a month, a freelancer needs 4 hours per video, you spend 1 hour reviewing each AI-edited video, and your time is worth $40 an hour. Those three inputs are assumptions, not findings. Replace them.
| Option | Inputs | Monthly cost | Per video |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry-level freelancer | $10/hr (Upwork entry median) × 4 h × 4 videos | $160 | $40 |
| Mid-level freelancer | $40/hr (Upwork mid-level median) × 4 h × 4 | $640 | $160 |
| Senior freelancer | $100/hr (Upwork senior median) × 4 h × 4 | $1,600 | $400 |
| Productized long-form service | Editvideo.io long-form, 4 videos (promotional price) | $295 | $73.75 |
| AI editor, plan only | Loopdesk Creator Lite | $19 | $4.75 |
| AI editor plus your review time | $19 + (1 h × $40 × 4) | $179 | $44.75 |
The point is not that AI costs $4.75 a video. It is that your review hour dominates: once you value your time, the plan price barely matters, and what matters is how many revision rounds the first draft needs. Credit usage depends on the edit, so test your own workflow before you budget. A cheap draft that needs heavy rework is not cheap.
When is hiring cheaper than using AI, and when is it not?
Hire when the work needs creative judgment, bespoke motion graphics, color finishing or client-facing polish; use an AI editor for repeatable work such as captions, rough cuts, silence removal, reframing and clip batches. A hybrid, with the AI doing the mechanical first pass and a person owning the story, is a common middle path.
| Task | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Captions, silence and filler removal, rough cuts | AI editor | Repeatable and easy to review |
| Highlight clips and vertical reframes from long videos | AI editor, with a person choosing the final cuts | Volume; see our best AI clipping tools |
| Brand-critical campaign film, motion design | Human editor | Taste and narrative control |
| Color grading for broadcast or film | Human colorist | Finishing standards |
| Weekly podcast or YouTube episode | Hybrid | AI first pass, human story pass; see how to edit a video podcast |
Our analysis in Will AI replace video editors? covers which tasks are effectively automated in 2026 and which remain human. For tools that can run multi-step edits from a prompt, see Best AI Video Editing Agents in 2026.
What hidden costs should you budget for?
Budget for revisions beyond the included rounds, rush fees, music and stock licensing, extra aspect ratios, captions and translation, storage, platform fees, and your own management and review time. For AI tools, add credit top-ups, export or resolution caps, watermark removal and seat charges. The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest finished video.
- Add-ons: Vidchops adds $95 a month for subtitles.
- Revision rules: 99 Dollar Social includes up to 3 rounds in month one and 1 per month after; Vidchops includes 3 per video on its weekly plan.
- Expiring credits: VEED's pricing FAQ and terms say credits do not carry over.
- Self-managed risk: the BLS median doesn't include recruiting, tools, equipment or idle time.
How do you brief an editor to get an accurate quote?
Send the finished length, number of videos, hours of source footage, reference videos for style, deliverables (aspect ratios, captions, languages), revision rounds, deadline and usage rights. Quotes based on "a 10-minute video" are guesses; quotes based on source footage, deliverables and revision limits are comparable across editors.

Finished length: [minutes] x [number of videos] per [week / month]
Source footage: [hours], [cameras and mics], [file formats]
Style references: [2-3 links]
Deliverables: [16:9 master] [9:16 clips x N] [captions: languages] [thumbnails?]

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to hire an AI video editor?
"AI video editor" usually means software, not a person: about $15-$24 a month for entry plans, with mid plans around $35-$39 (Loopdesk Creator Lite is $19, Creator Pro $39). If you mean a human editor who uses AI tools, expect normal freelance or agency rates, and ask whether AI savings show up in the quote.
How much should I pay a freelance video editor per hour?
Upwork's tier medians are $10 (entry), $40 (mid-level) and $100 (senior) per hour, and US aggregators report roughly $20-$42 an hour. The BLS median wage for employed editors is $36.26 an hour. Pay for the skill the project needs: simple cuts, or story, motion graphics and color.
How much does a YouTube video edit cost per video?
Published productized plans we checked work out to about $45-$124 per long-form video on monthly plans (Editvideo.io from $45.23, Vidchops $123.75). Freelancers quote per project or per finished minute; Fiverr cites $10-$100 per finished minute for social video. Complexity, length and revisions drive the price.
How much does a 1-minute video cost to edit?
Fiverr's guide puts social video at $10-$100 per finished minute, meaning per minute of edited video, not minutes of work. A one-minute explainer with motion graphics costs far more than a captioned talking-head clip, so quote by deliverables, not by the minute alone.
Is it cheaper to hire an offshore video editor?
Often the hourly rate is lower: Upwork says editors in India charge about $10-$60 per hour, and ReelRate's indicative ranges put India at $5-$35 and the Philippines at $10-$30 against $25-$150+ in the US. Factor in time zones, review effort, revisions and communication before comparing totals.
Can AI replace a video production agency?
For repeatable formats such as captions, clips, rough cuts and reformatting, AI can replace much of the manual work. For creative direction, narrative judgment, brand-critical film and complex motion design, agencies and human editors still lead. See Will AI replace video editors? for the task-by-task breakdown.
Is it cheaper to edit videos myself?
It is cheaper in cash and costlier in time. In the Creator Study, a manual batch of 3-5 clips took 8-12 hours. A $15-$39 plan is worth testing if it cuts that time, but it isn't free: credits and your own review hour still count. To reuse one recording for a week of posts, see How Coaches Turn One Call Into a Week of Video Content.
Want the AI side of the model? Open Loopdesk and test one real episode on a month-to-month plan (there is no free plan): Creator Lite is $19 a month with unlimited 4K exports and no watermark. For the full tool-by-tool price table, read our AI video editor pricing comparison.
